It is an important tool to detect the probability of fetal abnormalities during pregnancy (genetic disorders concerned with mental retardation; such as Trisomy 21, Trisomy 18, NTD, ...).
This blood test done for pregnant women between the 15th and the 20th week of pregnancy.
The test consists of combining levels of AFP, β-HCG and Estriol with the mother's age, weight, ethnicity and gestation of pregnancy to calculate the probability of abnormalities.
All pregnant women should be offered the triple screen, but it is recommended for women who :

Have a family history of birth defects.

Are 35 years or older.

Used possible harmful medications or drugs during pregnancy.

Have diabetes and use insulin.

Had a viral infection during pregnancy.

Have been exposed to high levels of radiation.
